Mary’s Question

Mary said to the angel, “How can this be, since I am a virgin?”

Luke 1:34

How? Before we get too far here, can we just see what has transpired this day for Mary to this point?

26And in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God unto a city of Galilee, named Nazareth, 27To a virgin espoused to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David; and the virgin’s name was Mary. 28And the angel came in unto her, and said, Hail, thou that art highly favoured, the Lord is with thee: blessed art thou among women. 29And when she saw him, she was troubled at his saying, and cast in her mind what manner of salutation this should be. 30And the angel said unto her, Fear not, Mary: for thou hast found favour with God. 31And, behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name JESUS. 32He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest: and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David: 33And he shall reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and of his kingdom there shall be no end. 34Then said Mary unto the angel, How shall this be, seeing I know not a man?

Luke 1:26

Mary’s Silence

HOW is going to steal today’s thoughts, but first look at the very first word in verse 26…THEN said Mary. THEN. Think about that, seriously. It tells us a lot about Mary. How many of us have teenagers, as was Mary, who we’ve said, “Don’t talk, listen…” while we were giving them instructions? And never mind teens, how many of us would have kept our mouths shut to this point? Mary, you amaze me again! THEN said Mary…HOW?

Mary’s Character being revealed

Considering the enormous transformation her life would take personally and make possible in all of us, we don’t hear a lot about Mary’s life before- or even too much after -this account with Gabriel. We DO know how important she was, and the Lord is unfolding her uprightness to us through these details. Mary’s character is being revealed.

Same Question

And Zechariah, said unto the angel, Whereby shall I know this? for I am an old man, and my wife well stricken in years.

Luke 1:18

Same question, different intent. Mary and Zechariah were told a very similar message from Gabriel and they both had almost the same response. How? Yet, they were indeed very different.

Zechariah and Mary were both chosen by the Lord to bare -and name- their son’s for God’s purpose.

5There was in the days of Herod, the king of Judaea, a certain priest named Zacharias, of the course of Abia: and his wife was of the daughters of Aaron, and her name was Elisabeth. 6And they were both righteous before God, walking in all the commandments and ordinances of the Lord blameless. 7And they had no child, because that Elisabeth was barren, and they both were now well stricken in years.

Luke 1:5-7

Zechariah was blameless and righteous, walking with God. Mary was highly favored, blessed among women and the Lord was with her. Seems they were much the same in these ways. But I see some significant differences, too.

Old vs Young

Scripture teaches us of the value in both youth, (I Tim 4:12) and age (Titus 2) and I think we see a peek into both right here in Luke. An old priest, knowledgeable, upright and God-fearing, doubting. A young virgin, humble, learning, willing.

Could it have been knowing too much about life that got in Zechariah’s way? Could it have been living too little that allowed Mary to be so willing? Not taking away anything from God’s Word and the wisdom that comes from walking with the Lord, or the great value young people have to offer as God gives them a work to do, but what a great pause here to remember God’s Spirit is in all of us who He has saved, and no matter where we are in our walk with Him He still has things to teach us. May we learn to temper the wisdom God has given us in our walk with Him-His redemptive story being written in our very lives-with the willingness of tender heart and faith like a child.

Intent

And Zechariah, said unto the angel, Whereby shall I know this? for I am an old man, and my wife well stricken in years.

Luke 1:8

Mary said to the angel, “How can this be, since I am a virgin?”

Luke 1:34

Suddenly Zechariah’s doubt filled his heart and his words. Though he was accustomed, as a priest, to seeing God show up; this old man knew better. In every way it was impossible for him to wrap his intelligence around God’s seemingly unintelligible message. His apprehension overcame his willingness to learn more. His how revealed his doubt.

Mary’s how was different. In her question she displayed her quest to learn more.

I. in interrogation; how? in what way? — in a direct question, followed by a. the indicative, it is the expression α. of one seeking information and desiring to be taught: Luke 1:34

God’s Message

Here, heading toward December 25th more than 2,000 years later, God’s message is not over. His Word is alive and well, and He is still working in the lives of His children. You and me. If you don’t know that, get into His Word. Start reading, praying and meditating over the Word of God. These things we’re seeing in Luke are fascinating, don’t you agree? Today I want to encourage you to think about your own how.

Your Response

What is it the Lord has been challenging you with? Are you responding with the same question Zechariah and Mary asked, how? There’s nothing wrong with asking the Lord how, but check your heart. Are you doubting or desiring to learn more?

This Jesus

Who is Jesus?

Mary’s very personal role in Jesus’ birth was appointed to her just a breath or two back, and Gabriel continued to talk. The question of how this could be had to push at least a little bit against this new information being shared from God’s obedient messenger as she went from trying to process logically to listening faithfully; her whirling thoughts running amuck as the angel’s words kept coming. Listening hard with each fresh word and trying just as hard to damper all of the questions from her heart, she heard more about the Jesus she was to give birth to in the months ahead.

This Jesus

He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest: and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David: And he shall reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and of his kingdom there shall be no end.

Luke 1:32-33

Not Greek to Mary

Our Jewish girl knew of this Jesus she was chosen to mother. These things were not Greek to her, but rather Hebrew!

  • He shall be great!
  • He shall be called, because He is, the Son of the Highest
  • He will be given his father, David’s, throne
  • He shall reign over Jacob’s house forever
  • His kingdom will have no end

Our Child’s Future

Has every mother looked into her child’s face and wondered what the future held for her baby? I think, yes, and I know I sure have. I still do-even as recently as this morning I was talking to a family member and wondering what the Lord has for my youngest. Mary got insight from God Himself who her son would be, and the answer is God Himself! He would be a great ruler and a forever King.

Do you think her knowledge base of Old Testament scripture started filling in while Gabriel spoke of this Jesus? Was she beginning to understand what was going on? Did the lightbulb between what she’d learned all her life about a coming savior and a virgin birth and what she’d just been told light up in her head?

This virgin?

That Jesus?

This life?

God’s Living Word

Mary didn’t have the New Testament to read, but just as God’s living Word jumps off the pages as we read it and His Spirit unwraps it in our hearts and minds, God’s Word was coming alive in Mary’s heart too, and in her womb.

This woman.

That Jesus.

This life!

YES! Friends, YOU & I, this woman. That Jesus and THIS life. I know this year has been the pits in a lot of ways for most of us, but I’m here to tell you, God’s living Word is STILL LIVING. Every woman of God has an opportunity like Mary, to respond to God’s Word, make room for Jesus and live THIS LIFE for Him.

Oh, you may have the same question today as Mary did that day…how? And that’s a logical question-one we will get to tomorrow but for today, let’s think about this week so far with Mary.

What’s your name?

Mary: chosen, favored, loved. Do you know Jesus? What’s your name?

Mirror Mirror on the Wall

Look into a mirror and talk to God.

This woman, that Jesus, this life: you are chosen, favored and loved.

The Calm Before the Storm

It’s Go Time

Now that Gabriel has made his appearance, greeted and also comforted Mary’s heart, he has a big message from God for her, and there’s no time to waste.

And, behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name JESUS.

Luke 1:31

Ok, you’re probably getting to know me a bit by now, but I have to stop here and take a look at this first word, Behold. Gabriel isn’t simply saying, Hey Mary!

3708 horáō – properly, see, often with metaphorical meaning: “to see with the mind” (i.e. spiritually see), i.e. perceive (with inward spiritual perception).

Behold!

Behold! It’s a verb. When you want your child’s attention you might call out his or her name, but when you expect your child to respond to what you’re about to say, you may start out with something like, “Listen to what I’m going to say.”

Behold: pay attention and grasp what I am about to tell you.

Mary’s Instructions

I don’t know if Mary’s heartbeat had slowed down at all from all this heavenly commotion, but it was about to gain speed again. As Gabriel talked, Mary received her instructions from God.

And, behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name JESUS.

Luke 1:31

Gabriel sure says a whole lot in a few words, doesn’t he? (I should take note.) Look at what he’s said now: Mary’s divine instructions.

  1. You’re going to conceive
  2. You’re going to give birth to a son.
  3. You’re going to name your baby JESUS.

Those Two Lines

Positive HPT. If you know what that means, it’s likely you’ve taken an at home pregnancy test and watched two lines appear. Do you recall what your thoughts were in that minute? Whether or not you were hopeful for those two lines, I bet your thoughts took off to the future as they appeared. I imagine your heart and mind exploded at once with questions, predicaments and hope! With just those two lines, our lives are flooded with wonder and wanderings.

(A quick pop in of empathy for those waiting to see that second line show up. I know your pain and can promise of God’s perfect timing through it all. May God bless you in your hope for a baby!)

Unexpectedly Expecting

Have you ever heard, “Was it a surprise?” when announcing your pregnancy? Some of you can say you were unexpectedly expecting, but that’s only partially true (which is why you bought that HPT to begin with). But Mary? Mary found herself absolutely unexpectedly expecting.

These First Three Lines

Gabriel greeted the Virgin Mary moments before with the first three lines:

  • You’re highly favored.
  • The Lord is with you.
  • You are blessed among women.

But just wait for the next three lines!

Calm Before the Storm

No sooner had Gabriel confirmed and comforted Mary’s very troubled heart, he’s right there ready to continue with God’s message. And, what was to come next would be even more shocking than even his surprising arrival to her in Nazareth.

The Next Three Lines

And, behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name JESUS.

Luke 1:31

Mary, espoused to Joseph-remember, in her time there were 3 points to a consummated marriage, and Mary & Joseph had not gotten to the last. So, Mary was a virgin, she was at her childhood home-Joseph had a customary year to come get his bride-and until a few moments ago this day was just another ordinary day in Mary’s young life. The angel continues to share God’s message, and the next three lines were sure going to change her life!

  • You are going to be pregnant.
  • You will have a son.
  • You will name Him Jesus.

Talk about a flood of wondering and wanderings in a woman’s heart. Young Mary: chosen, favored & loved, has just heard big things from God’s messenger. She grappled with her fear. She learned the what (a pregnancy and baby) and the who (Jesus), but there was a big empty space…the how.

Behold Favor

For He says: “In the time of favor I heard you, and in the day of salvation I helped you.” Behold, now is the time of favor; now is the day of salvation!

2 Corinthians 6:2

Here in this 6 day with Mary we behold God’s favor on her, and in 2 Cor. 6:2 we behold God’s favor on us, those who receive His salvation. CHRISTmas season. Jesus’ mother. God’s salvation. Behold, now is the time of favor; now is the day of salvation! Come to Him.
