Jehovah Tsuri My Rock
Unto thee will I cry, O LORD my rock; be not silent to me: lest, if thou be silent to me, I become like them that go down into the pit.
Psalm 28:1
Or, as the NIV reads:
(Of David.) To you, LORD, I call; you are my Rock, do not turn a deaf ear to me. For if you remain silent, I will be like those who go down to the pit.
Psalm 28:1
Don’t be quiet!
David is pleading with God not to be silent, to wake up and hear his cry, to be his ROCK…or else he would die.
David was desperate for the Lord. He was sure he needed his Rock, his Jehovah Tsuir, to save him. I’m sure I need him, too. I cry out to the Lord, my Rock, Jehovah Tsuri; don’t be silent or I’ll surely die.
Rock
It may seem like there are better names for the God you are depending on to save you-even your very life, don’t you think?
Rock.
What is it about a rock that is indicative to saving us? What good is a rock? (This is when I should have paid better attention to when my brothers played rock-paper-scissors. I suddenly wonder- how often did the rock beat out the other two?
Refuge
Ever been to the USA midwest? Seen the Grand Canyon? There is no shortage of incredible rocks in the world-take a look around google and be amazed! (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_rock_formations_in_the_United_States).
Certainly if any of us were in danger needing refuge, any of these mammoth sized rocks would do just fine, and there’d be no need of fear of an enemy breech.
The God of my rock; in him will I trust: he is my shield, and the horn of my salvation, my high tower, and my refuge, my saviour; thou savest me from violence.
2 Samuel 2:22
Exaltation
Not only are those rocks a great place for safety, they almost touch the sky-maybe some even do! They’re majestic!
Take Half Dome in Yosemite National Park for example. It is far above others and rises more than 8000 feet above sea level. Even if by way of an underwhelming photograph (https://yosemite.org/wallpapers/half-dome-in-snow/), there are few words to grasp its enormity and exaltation).
The LORD liveth; and blessed be my rock; and let the God of my salvation be exalted.
Psalm 14:36
Jehovah Tsuri, GOD is my Rock
It is not a bad idea to try and garner some understanding for the Lord being named our rock. Of course we will come up short, very, when comparing even His own creation to Himself, The Creator.
Our Rock
Our Rock is deity. Our Rock is God. Our Rock is living, now and forever.
Our rock is salvation! No other rock in any form will ever be someone’s salvation. He alone is my rock.
Salvation
He is my salvation.
My soul, wait thou only upon God; for my expectation is from him. He only is my rock and my salvation: he is my defence; I shall not be moved. In God is my salvation and my glory: the rock of my strength, and my refuge, is in God. Trust in him at all times; ye people, pour out your heart before him: God is a refuge for us. Selah.
Psalm 62:5-8
My Everything
My Rock, my all in all, my everything. Jehovah Tsuri.
